Rabbi Nathan Alfred

Rabbi Nathan Alfred became the first resident Rabbi for the United Hebrew Congregation of Singapore (UHC) in January 2015.

British-born, Rabbi Nathan grew up in a Reform community in South-East London. He read Classics at King's College, Cambridge, before spending time in Budapest, Hungary playing chess - his major passion.

He was ordained by Leo Baeck College in 2008, and then worked to build two liberal communities in Belgium and Luxembourg, with much success. He also worked for Reform communities in Poland, the UK and France, as well as creating the young adults group, EuroJews.

He joined the UHC and threw himself whole-heartedly into new challenges in our community and throughout AsiaPacific. Rabbi Nathan was pivotal in the creation of our Sunday Hebrew school, our liturgy, our adult education program and our musical programming. He will forever be indelibly imprinted on our community.

After six remarkable years with the UHC, Rabbi Nathan made aliyah to Israel with his family and works now as head of International Development and Community Building for the World Union for Progressive Judaism.
